What do you do if you can’t find a band to join, but you really, really want to be in a band? The answer – start your own. Ok, Ok, what if you really, really want to start your own band, but can’t find musicians? The answer – do everything yourself!
Wrapped In A Sheet is a one man blackened death metal project from Derby. With influences including Emperor and Cradle Of Filth you should be able to tell where musically Wrapped In A Sheet sits. However, this one man black metal machine has much more to offer than simple worship of his peers and idols.
‘Vultures’ ranges from fast and heavy one minute, to slow and melodic the next. The great thing about this variety is the pure atmosphere created. Some tracks are truly terrifying and haunting, and will send shivers into your very soul, such is the atmosphere created by this release. There are some great melodic pieces on this album, especially in “November Aria II - Of Frozen Earth” and “Leopold von Sacher-Masoch vs. the Marquis de Sade”.
For a one man army, Scarecrow (The brains behind Wrapped In A Sheet) has perfected the ability to make his tracks sound huge. These songs sound so large that it puts the frozen landscape of Immortal’s ‘Blashyrkh’ to shame.
There are some quite brilliant black metal riffs on ‘Vultures’, and surely any fan of the genre will find something to love in this release. However, even if you’re not a fan of the black metal genre there is something for you here. You will struggle not to find the tracks on ‘Vultures’ infectious, I know because this is what happened to me. I am nothing more than a casual fan of this genre, but I would have this release in my collection over the genre leaders.
The vocals produced by Scarecrow are fantastic, heavy, guttural, harsh, savage but also decipherable, an element that added to my enjoyment immensely. Dani Filth can only wish he could produce vocals of this quality.
This album flows perfectly, the elements of black metal heaviness and beautiful melody mix to create a refreshing and welcome sound in the blackened death metal genre.
One thing that disappoints me greatly about this album is I won’t have the opportunity to listen to this release in a live setting. So Scarecrow, if you’re reading this, get yourself a live band together, and hit the scene. Everyone else, check this project out – you have no excuse as Scarecrow is giving ‘Vultures’ away for free [or you can donate some cash to the project too! - RB], what a nice straw-stuffed being he is
